Piedmont Community Actions (PCA) is a private non-profit agency which serves Spartanburg and Cherokee counties in the upstate of South Carolina. Our mission is to provide a nurturing environment in which low-income families can seek assistance that helps them to become less dependent upon government assistance.

Our services are available to anyone who wants to spay/neuter their pet, however, our focus is on targeted surgeries for low-income families. Mobile Meals is a home-delivered hot meal service for the homebound of Spartanburg County who are unable to prepare their own food. No charge is made for the meals, delivered Monday through Friday, and there are no income or age restrictions for potential recipients. Volunteers are the life line of Mobile Meals; it takes at least 150 volunteers per day to see that meals are delivered to the 2,000 recipients served each weekday. HALTER is an affordable Therapeutic Horseback Riding program that has been serving citizens with disabilities from the Spartanburg area and students from the South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind since 1987.
HALTER is a PATH International (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International) member-center, so volunteers are required to receive training before they are able to work with the program in order for volunteers and HALTER’s riders to have a safe and successful experience. Only those 15 or older are allowed to work directly with clients, however, those ages 10 – 14 who are accompanied by a parent volunteer may volunteer as a Pony Pal. Experience and knowledge of horses is not necessary.

Safe Homes serves Spartanburg, Cherokee, and Union Counties, giving help, support, and emergency shelter to victims of rape and domestic violence and their children. A group of concerned citizens took on the challenge and established the Tyger River Foundation in 2007. The Foundation brings a focused, long-term vision and a sustainable plan to protect, promote and restore the Tyger River Basin for public use and enjoyment.
Since its inception, The Foundation has acquired and begun restoring Anderson Mill (a 200-year-old grist mill registered as the oldest standing mill in South Carolina and the birthplace of Spartanburg County government), organized river sweeps and clean-up projects, and opened Spartanburg County’s first public park and river access point on the Tyger River, Nesbitt Shoals Nature Park. Other projects and acquisitions include Tygerberry Landing, Beech Springs Landing, and Cooley Family Landing.
We are also working with Wofford College to conserve the Upper Shoals Preserve at Glendale, a property adjacent to the Goodall Center for Environmental Learning.
