Construction crews are set to become an even more common sight in Downtown Spartanburg after City Council unanimously approved two major development projects at their meeting earlier this week.
Owners of the Spartanburg Marriott, Jimmy Gibbs and Andrew Cajka plan to build new office building at least three stories tall with 50,000 square feet of space to accommodate 250 professional office workers.
Under terms of the agreement, two-thirds of those workers must be from businesses currently located outside the city limits. Council agreed to provide the site at no cost and to provide Gibbs and Cajka with limited-time defined development rights for another potential development on an adjacent property. A portion of Silver Hill Street is also to be moved for the development.
In addition to new workers, downtown is also set to get some new residents as Council approved a new mixed-use development for the corner of W Main Street and Daniel Morgan Avenue. The agreement provides the property at no cost to local developer Royce Camp, who has plans for a five-story residential development promising 30 new apartment units as well as 3,000 square feet of ground floor retail space. The property is currently used for surface parking. Offsetting the loss of 14 parking spaces, the city plans to expand a surface lot one block away on the corner of Broad and Spring streets, demolish two aging buildings to accommodate 65 new spaces.
