The Brooks Center for the Performing Arts celebrates the 25th anniversary of Clemson University’s award-winning Utsey Chamber Music Series during its 2010-11 season. Started in 1986 with the goal of offering quality classical music performances free of charge to the Clemson community, the series is nationally recognized for showcasing internationally renowned musicians. Utsey Chamber Music Series The Utsey Series will bring free performances by the Imani Winds (Sept. 23), the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet (Oct. 21), pianist Alon Goldstein (Feb. 17, 2011) and the vocal ensemble Calmus (March 29, 2011). “It seems like yesterday when we launched,” said series founder and Brooks Center director Lillian Harder. “We are extremely grateful to our loyal donors and patrons for making this milestone possible.” Boni Belle Brooks Series The center’s Boni Belle Brooks Series features a preeminent lineup of guest artists and special attractions. There will be more Broadway performances than ever, starting with "The Color Purple" (Sept. 7), followed by "Forever Plaid" (Nov. 16), "The Wizard of Oz" (March 14, 2011) and "A Chorus Line" (April 11, 2011). The Boni Belle Brooks Series also will present legendary jazz trumpeter Jon Faddis (Sept. 14), the all-male vocal ensemble Chanticleer (Nov. 8), and the over-the-top strings sensation Bowfire (March 1, 2011). Performances of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly (Oct. 19), the popular Celtic fiddler Natalie MacMaster (Dec. 13), the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra (Feb. 21, 2011) and other concerts offer a wide range of music choices. For lovers of dance, Pilobolus Dance Theater (Feb. 8, 2011) performs progressive and innovative choreography, while the Houston Ballet II (Jan. 23, 2011) features many up-and-coming stars of American ballet. “As always, we strive to present a balanced season with selections for everyone to enjoy," Harder said. “The Boni Belle Brooks Series is our platform for giving the community a variety of outstanding entertainment selections.” Family Series Families, too, have much to choose from, as the Brooks Center’s Family Series contains affordable and wholesome entertainment. Michael Cooper’s "Masked Marvels and Wondertales" (Sept. 21) returns with oversized masks and whimsical stories. Bixby’s "Rainforest Rescue" (Oct. 28) is an action-packed sing-along show about nature conservation and preservation. Nearly 50 dogs, cats and birds perform circus feats in Popovich Comedy Pet Theater (Feb. 28, 2011). And Dorothy, Toto, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion discover there’s no place like home in "The Wizard of Oz" (March 14, 2011). “These are shows for families to enjoy together. They are reasonably priced; in most cases cheaper than a night at the movies,” said Harder. Department of Performing Arts Musical Showcase Music performances abound throughout the 2010-2011 season with concerts by Clemson’s best student musicians and singers. Under the direction of Clemson University music faculty members, the student choral ensembles, instrumental ensembles and the symphony orchestra and band perform traditional and contemporary selections from October through April. Among the season’s highlights is a joint performance by the Clemson University Symphony Orchestra and the classic rock group Kansas (Oct. 13). The 1970s-era band will perform memorable hits with the orchestra, including “Dust in the Wind, “Carry On Wayward Son” and others. Clemson Players The Clemson Players present four diverse stage productions: “These Shining Lives” (Oct. 6-10), “The Way of the World” (Nov. 15-21), “Eleemosynary” (Feb. 28-March 6, 2011) and Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” (April 18-24, 2011). "We look forward to an exciting year of entertaining and inspiring performances,” Harder said. “We invite you to join us.” Single-event online ticket sales begin at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 13.
