Council Gets Overview of City Crime Statistics

At a workshop following their meeting this week, City Council heard an overview of city crime statistics from Police Chief Alonzo Thompson.

The Chief detailed a decades-long decline in crime, with a nearly 40 percent drop in total crime since 2005. Violent crimes were down 42 percent over that same time period, with property crimes down 39 percent.

At their regular meeting preceeding the workshop, Council approved 7-0 allocations for this year’s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and Home funding, federal dollars the City receives annually from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. In his presentation to Council, Community Services Director Mitch Kennedy said that funding the City receives from HUD continues to decline, noting that local governments are being asked to do more with less funding. For fiscal year 2017, the City received $616,221 in CDBG funding and HOME grant funding totaling $152,899. View the approved full allocation breakdown below.
