Southland Landscape Corporation provided 50 man hours to Hatcher Garden on a recent Saturday to assist in preparations for spring.
“This comes at a great time. As any gardener knows, there is so much to be done to get ready for spring. Having of team of professionals come in and lend a hand will give us a big jump on the season. They will help us with planting, pruning and general garden care and maintenance,” says Joe Mullinax, Executive Director of Hatcher Garden. Chip Key, Operations Manager for Southland, says, “We’re bringing in 10 or more of our crew foreman to work under the direction of Hatcher’s horticulturist, Jeff Hall. We’re treating this as a workshop. We’re lending a hand but we expect to learn some things as well here at Spartanburg’s public garden. We want to be good citizens and give back to the community. We were asked by a board member of Hatcher Garden to give their staff some assistance and we thought it was a great idea.” Southland Landscape Corporation services range from basic grounds maintenance to comprehensive installation. They service the Upstate through their Spartanburg office. As their brochure says, “From choosing the right flowers and color combinations to cutting the grass or installing a beautiful waterfall, Southland can do it all.” To learn more about Southland, visit them at www.southlandusa.com. This assistance from Southland comes just in time for our 10th birthday. Hatcher Garden, though started in 1969 as a backyard project of Josephine and Harold Hatcher, became a 501(c)3 not-for-profit public garden in 1998, so 2008 is our 10th anniversary as an organization. “Our birthday is a celebration of the community that supports this garden,” says Joe Mullinax, Executive Director. “We wouldn’t exist without volunteers and donors. We logged over 3,000 volunteer hours last year and donations are our largest source of revenue. We certainly appreciate the helping hands from Southland.” Hatcher Garden & Woodland Preserve is a 10-acre public garden located at 820 John B. White Sr, Blvd, Spartanburg, SC. Open 365 days a year during daylight hours with no admission fee for families and individuals. The Garden features a series of ponds; walking trails; plantings of annuals, perennials and shrubs; a native woodland of mixed hardwoods; and a diverse population of wildlife. The Garden’s tree collection consists of over 1,200 specimens representing over 100 species. Hatcher Garden is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization.
