Hub City and Others Launch Growing Great Readers

Hub City Writers Project, BirthMatters and the Adolescent Family Life Program have teamed to create to create “Growing Great Readers,” which will place high-quality picture and board books into participating families’ homes.

The new program complements Hub City’s annual book drive, “Great Kids Deserve Great Books,” which in its sixth year provided 4,000 free summer-reading books to elementary school students in Spartanburg last month.

“We modeled this program after Dolly Parton’s hugely successful Imagination Library,” said Anne Waters, Hub City Bookshop manager and program coordinator. “What distinguishes our program is first, that we are local, and second, that the books we select are books that can be enjoyed by the youngest bibliophiles. We are thrilled to partner with Molly Chappell-McPhail of BirthMatters and Tina Gaudiano of the Adolescent Family Life Program and hope to grow this initiative with them in the coming years.”

Representatives from the Spartanburg County Library will be on hand to register attendees interested in participating in its summer reading programs and those seeking to obtain library cards.
