Local Students Exhibit Artwork at Chapman Cultural Center

Chapman Cultural Center is presenting an exhibition of artwork created by students from Spartanburg County School District 6 and private schools through Jan. 3rd in its Student Galleries.

The Student Galleries are located on the first and second floors of the Carlos Dupré Moseley Building. The galleries are open Monday through Saturday, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Sunday, 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Admission is free and the exhibit is open to the public.

Schools featured in the current exhibition include Spartanburg Christian Academy, S.C. School for the Deaf and Blind, Meeting Street Academy, St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School, Spartanburg Prep, Woodland Heights Elementary, Roebuck Elementary, Jesse S. Bobo Elementary, Pauline Glenn Springs Elementary, West View Elementary, Arcadia Elementary, Anderson Mill Elementary, Montessori Academy, Fairforest Middle School, Gable Middle School, and R.P. Dawkins Middle School.

The collection consists of a variety of pieces with different subjects, mediums, and colors produced by students ranging from kindergarten to high school. The artworks include drawings, paintings, sculptures, and more, all of which capture and highlight the artistic expression and creativity of Spartanburg students.

“By including Art/Design in traditional STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) education and creating ‘STEAM,’ students learn to approach problem-solving through different perspectives and create outside-the-box solutions,” Arts Education Director Ava Hughes said. “The arts are key to a complete education for every child.”

Exhibits in the Student Galleries rotate throughout the year to showcase art from students of public, private, and technical schools in Spartanburg County. Curating the Student Galleries is one of many ways Chapman Cultural Center is dedicated to arts integration and a well-rounded education for all Spartanburg County school children. In addition to exhibiting student artwork, Chapman brings schools to its theater for schooltime performances, schedules performances on schools’ stages, and places professional teaching artists in classrooms for week-long residencies, in addition to hosting the annual Milliken STEAM Teacher’s Institute focused on arts integration.
