Carolina Miracle League Looks to Enter Phase III of Construction

The Carolina Miracle League (CML) has started in the road toward Phase III of construction efforts at Miracle Park. While the CML is not turning dirt just yet, plans are drawn for the final phase of the complex. With this final phase comes one additional financial hurdle as well. Phase III includes a sorely needed handicapped accessible restroom and concessions facility.

"We are looking at combining several funding sources at the present time - grants and additional community funds - to complete this portion of the facility," said league director Pam Dean. To clear this milestone, the CML is in the process of raising approximately $75,000 through community donations and couple that with other funding sources to reach the $155,000 Phase III goal. "We have some funds available to use on the restroom facility, but the additional $75,000 will accelerate the process and allow for the entire project to be complete by the spring."

The handicapped accessible restroom is being built separately from the concession area, to help speed the process of completing the restroom in time for the spring season. The buildings will be separated by a small patio.

CML looks to expand participation in Cherokee, Union and North Carolina "We have been very fortunate in this first year to receive a generous amount of press coverage, but as we look toward our spring (2008) season we are stepping up outreach efforts to Union and Cherokee Counties as well as Rutherford and Polk Counties in North Carolina," said media relations coordinator Lenny Mathis. "With the location of the field in northern Spartanburg County (Boiling Springs), the park is within a 30-45 minute drive of so many children in outlying areas that can benefit from the league's services."

To that end, several members of the CML Board of Directors have made information presentations to various civic groups over the past few weeks including the Spartanburg Evening Lions Club, the Union Rotary Club and a pair of local church groups - New Beginnings United Methodist Church and Restoration Church. The CML board plans to contact the school boards in each area to make presentations to increase participation from outside of Spartanburg County.

"Cultivating contacts through civic and church groups is vital to our success in attracting buddies for games in the future. We have already seen when people come out to watch, we immediately get asked "How can I help?" added buddy coordinator Eric Eberius.

The Carolina Miracle League is a non-profit organization founded in 2001 to build a baseball diamond tailored to the special needs of children with disabilities. Miracle Park, located inside the Spartanburg County Parks and Recreation Department's North Spartanburg Sports Complex on Old Furnace Road in Boiling Springs, features a ProTraxx playing surface that accommodates wheelchairs and walkers. Miracle Park serves children with disabilities in Spartanburg, Union and Cherokee Counties in South Carolina and Rutherford and Polk Counties in North Carolina. This project was funded in part by Spartanburg County Community and Economic Development Department through the use of U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Community Development Block Grant Funds.

The CML continues to raise funds for the final phase to the project - a handicapped accessible restroom and concession facility adjacent to the field.
