The official start of spring might be March 20, but things will really start blooming in Asheville March 29, when the Western North Carolina Orchid Society presents its 11th annual juried show and sale, one of the most popular events held each year at the North Carolina Arboretum.
The theme for this year’s show is “Islands of Orchids,” and in addition to spectacular displays of these exotic flowers from various orchid societies and greenhouses, there will be educational presentations, and WNCOS members will be available to answer questions. Those interested in trying their hand at growing orchids for the first time as well as seasoned orchid pros will find plenty of world-renowned vendors with plants and growing supplies, such as pots, fertilizers, potting mixes, instructional books and more available for sale. “This is possibly the best quality vendor list we have ever had,” said Graham Ramsey, WNCOS vice president and the event’s chairperson. “The selection of plants for sale will be one of the best anywhere in the country.” Those attending the event will also have the opportunity to try their luck at winning one of the many raffle prizes, ranging from exceptional orchid specimens to a stay at the historic 1889 White Gate Inn & Cottage Bed & Breakfast.

The Western North Carolina Orchid Society is a non-profit organization composed of people who share the excitement and joy of growing orchids. The society's function is to meet monthly to share orchid growing experiences and to gather new information that would enhance the growing experience. The WNCOS 2008 Orchid Show will be on exhibit at the Arboretum’s Education Center Saturday, March 29 from 9 am to 5 pm and Sunday, March 30 from 10 am to 5 pm. The event is free to the public; normal Arboretum parking charges apply.
