Four District One Schools spent part of their summer break competing with 192 schools from across the United States for a $10,000.00 grand prize or one of forty-five $2000.00 prizes through Big Lots’ Lots2Give program. O.P. Earle Elementary, Inman Intermediate, Landrum Middle, and Chapman High Schools were competitors in an in-store donation program, which began in June and ran through July 5; Customers helped their chosen school by donating $1 or $5 at participating Big Lots stores. One hundred percent of donations went to participating schools. Landrum Middle, Chapman High, and O.P. Earle Elementary schools each received a $100.00 donation. In addition to the in-store donation program, participating schools had the opportunity to put their creativity to the test by submitting a short video and brief essay explaining why their school is in need of financial support. Schools from across the US encouraged their community to vote for their videos and assist them in their bid for the top prize. Friends and families of District One were encouraged to show their support by voting for their favorite District One school video. The videos were wonderfully creative. O.P. Earle’s was titled "Mission Possible" and it was produced by Debbie Belue. Landrum Middle School’s video was titled "This is LMS" with Ginger Wesolowski as the producer. Chapman High’s video was created by Summer Webb and Amy Ballentine and was titled "Broadcast Blues at Chapman High." Inman Intermediate’s winning video, "Lots2Learn Techno-Rap," was created by Dolly Blackwood, Amber Keeran, and Tammy Starnes. A check for $2069.00 was presented to Principal, Debbie Wright, and the students who appeared in the video, $2000.00 for being a video winner and $69.00 from in-store donations. “IIS is thrilled to win this award. We appreciate all the votes from our students, parents, and the Inman community. As a school winner, we will use the $2000.00 to purchase document cameras and projectors for IIS. Our video was titled, Lots 2 Learn Techno Rap, and featured Katie Ash, Faith Bott, and Lauren Wilson, 5th grade Inman Intermediate Students,” said Principal Wright. “These projects were a wonderful opportunity to engage our students in a creative process using multi-media techniques. As a “Student-Centered” school district, we are always looking for ways to encourage our students to reach for a goal and teach them the skills they need for success,” said Dr. Ron Garner, District One Schools Superintendent.
