Moody Black Hosts Poetry Slam on May 11

Poetry Slam was invented by Marc Smith in Chicago in 1986 and brought to the Upstate in the 1990s by poet Glenis Redmond. Spartanburg locals can experience this art form at a $50 Poetry Slam, hosted by Moody Black, on May 11. The event begins at 7:30PM at Coffee Underground in Greenville.

Throw your poetic gaunlet into the slam ring to win $50 in this friendly, high-energy slam! Sign up at the door beginning at 7PM. Cover is $5.

Judges are chosen from the audience. The night also includes an open mic.

Simply put, poetry slam is the competitive art of performance poetry. It puts a dual emphasis on writing and performance, encouraging poets to focus on what they're saying and how they're saying it. A poetry slam is an event in which poets perform their work and are judged by members of the audience.
