Smart Upstate Looks at Transportation Across County Boundaries

In an effort to improve transportation connections across Greenville and Spartanburg, participants recently immersed themselves in a mapping session at CU-ICAR in Greenville.
The event was a collaboration between Greenville Pickens Area Transportation Study (GPATS), Appalachian Council of Governments (ACOG), Spartanburg Area Transportation Study (SPATS), Spartanburg County, SMART at the University of Michigan, and InnoMobility.

The mapping session was part of a project known as “SMART Upstate” which is facilitated by a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between GPATS, ACOG, and SPATS that allows staff to coordinate the planning of transportation projects.

SMART Upstate is modeled on the SMART program at the University of Michigan that utilizes mapping sessions to encourage cross-sector transportation coordination and innovation to make destinations and activities more accessible for all individuals, to make the transportation system more efficient, and to improve the potential for economic development.
