Spartans Open Spring Season at Furman

The USC Upstate women’s tennis team opens its spring season when the Spartans travel to Greenville, S.C., to battle in-state rival Furman from the Minor Herndon Mickel Tennis Center.

Upstate returns three members from last year’s team, including All-Atlantic Sun members Isabel von Stryk and Anna Zoske. Von Stryk was selected to the All-A-Sun first team after ending the season with a team-best 12-6 overall record in singles play, which was tied for the third-most victories of any player in the A-Sun.

She also turned in a 5-2 record in conference play and was tied for the second-most wins in the league.

Playing primarily from the No. 1 position, von Stryk featured a stretch midway through the season where she won eight of nine singles matches. Additionally, she ended the season with two consecutive wins and victories in seven of her final nine matches.

Von Stryk is the first Spartans to be named to the All-A-Sun first team since Upstate Hall of Fame member Anna Novo accomplished the feat in 2009.

Zoske finished tied for second on the team in 2014 with seven singles victories and had the ninth-most wins at the No. 2 position in the A-Sun. She earned a spot on the A-Sun All-Freshman team at the end of the year and was the seventh Spartan to receive that honor.

Furman went 17-6 overall and 9-0 in the Southern Conference last season under head coach Debbie Southern. The Paladins, however, were upset in the SoCon semifinals by Elon.
