Spunky New Rapunzel Casts a Spell at the Spartanburg Youth Theatre

The 2015-2016 season at the Spartanburg Youth Theatre opens with a fresh twist on the fairytale classic Rapunzel by playwright Catherine Bush, brought to life by thirteen young actors.

Rapunzel isn’t your run-of-the-mill princess — she has a few surprises in store for Prince Charming. In this new version of the tale, “happily ever after” comes with a healthy side of girl power and an adventure full of twists, turns, and, of course, true love. “In our story, Rapunzel takes her destiny into her own hands,” says director Lauren Ferebee. “And it’s told in a very creative way. Two roving singers happen upon a tower and bring the tale magically to life with their song.”

Each season, the Spartanburg Youth Theatre offers four affordable, family-friendly productions featuring local youth onstage and behind the scenes. In addition to Rapunzel, the 2015-2016 season includes Twas the Night Before Christmas, Junie B. Jones: The Musical and Stuart Little. Adult and youth season memberships that include tickets to all four shows can be purchased online at www.spartanburgyouththeatre.com.

Rapunzel plays at Chapman Cultural Center Oct. 9 at 4:30 pm and 7:00 pm and Oct. 10 at 2:00 pm.
