Just as students return to campus at the University of South Carolina, the Healthy Carolina Farmers Market returns every Tuesday, from Aug. 31 through Sept. 28.A symbol of the university’s commitment to healthy living, the market will operate from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. between the iron gates on Greene Street in front of the Russell House University Union. A huge hit among students, faculty, staff and the community, the market draws nearly 1,000 customers weekly. The market features fresh and locally produced vegetables and fruits, meats and cheeses, seafood, peanuts, homemade breads and an array of specialty items by local farmers. Products, which are cash and carry, are competitively priced and sold individually and in bulk. The Healthy Carolina Farmers Market is part of a national collegiate trend to promote nutrition education and sustainable agriculture (buying fresh produce from local farmers) to students, faculty and staff. The university’s Healthy Carolina Initiative aims to simplify healthy choices.
