USC Upstate Site for Advanced Placement Graduate Institutes This Summer

The School of Education at the University of South Carolina Upstate has been selected to offer an Advanced Placement (AP) Graduate Institute for Studio Art, Statistics and U.S. History. The South Carolina General Assembly has allocated funds to the South Carolina Department of Education (SDE) to support the state’s Advanced Placement Program. These funds are distributed on a competitive basis, with proposals reviewed by the SDE and College Board.

“The level of expertise and excellence that USC Upstate has to offer in these areas gives us the ability to provide graduate course level courses to high school teachers throughout the state,” said Dr. Rebecca Stevens, associate professor of education and director of Graduate Programs and Special Initiatives at USC Upstate.

The AP Summer Institute for Studio Art will be offered May 31-June 27. This is the third year in a row that it has been offered at USC Upstate and continues to be the only such program offered in South Carolina. This offering is designed to train high school art teachers to prepare an AP syllabus and curriculum that adheres to the rigorous standards of both the College Board and the South Carolina Visual and Performing Arts Standards.

The institute involves an introduction to the AP process, direct instruction in syllabus/curriculum, discussion board forums, development of the AP syllabus/curriculum for the respective high school, and the use of resources to use in the classroom through Internet, museum visits, and photographing slides. At the end of the institute the art teacher will have created an AP syllabus and curriculum for their respective high school, one model lesson using the CLIA format and a studio art lesson that will feature a work from the Greenville County Museum of Art.

Assistant Professor of Art Education Dr. Mary Lou Hightower will lead the Advanced Placement Summer Institute for Studio Art in collaboration with Robert Urban, an art teacher at Dorman High School. The AP Summer Institute for Statistics will be offered June 12-24. This is first year USC Upstate has been awarded this subject area and it is only one of two institutes in the state to host this subject. This offering will provide training for newly-assigned AP Statistics teachers in the content of the subject area, in the effective implementation of the AP courses in their schools, and in strategies to prepare students for the AP exam. In the long-term the educational experiences for children in South Carolina public schools will be enhanced by training more AP Statistics teachers to offer such opportunities to more students throughout the state.

Assistant Professor of Mathematics Dr. Bernard Omolo will lead the AP Summer Institute for Statistics in collaboration with Mark Fahling, a math and science teacher at Gaffney High School.

The AP Summer Institute for U.S. History will be offered July 10-23. This is first year USC Upstate has been awarded this subject area and the University is one of three institutes in the state to host this subject. This offering will provide training for newly-assigned AP U.S. history teachers in the content of the subject area, the effective implementation of the AP courses in their schools, and in strategies to prepare students for the AP examination. The long-term goals are to enhance the educational experiences for children in South Carolina public schools by training more AP U.S. history teachers as well as the vertical planning to generate more U.S. history opportunities for children across the grades.

Assistant Professor of History Dr. Carmen Harris will lead the AP Summer Institute for U.S. History in collaboration with Steve Jobe, a U.S. history teacher at Spartanburg High School.

The cost for each program is $100 and includes supplies and materials. Participants must apply to USC Upstate as non-degree graduate student. First preference for enrollment will be given to teachers who will be teaching the appropriate AP course in 2007-2008, next will be teachers at an AP school, last will be content area teachers in pre-AP grades.
