Women Giving for Spartanburg Makes an Impact

Women Giving for Spartanburg met this spring for their second Annual Meeting to award $224,000 in grants to seven local nonprofit groups. Now 231 members strong, Women Giving is making an indelible impression on our community.

The Spartanburg County Foundation has recently issued a challenge grant of $25,000 for the next 25 members.

WGFS grants focus on five core areas: Arts and Culture, Education, Environment, Health, and Human Services. The grants were awarded to organizations that provide innovative approaches to the goals identified in the Strategic Spartanburg: Community Indicator VI report or the strategies in the Community Improvement Plan.

The organizations receiving awards this year are the following:

Healthy Smiles, Licensed Dental Professional;
Adult Learning Center, “ALC to Go” Program;
Boys & Girls of the Upstate, “Family PLUS Program”;
Charles Lea Center Foundation, Wellness Program;
Citizens Scholars program, Parent Empowerment Program;
Greater Saint James Temple Church, Soup Kitchen, and
St. Luke’s Free Medical Clinic, Part-time Registered Nurse.

“The needs in our community have never been greater,” said Jo Ann McMillan, Chair of the WGFS Grants Committee. “And this year’s grants, totaling $224,000, will support four new programs addressing health and education, a new food ministry addressing hunger, and critical staffing for two healthcare programs.”

Women Giving for Spartanburg is a women’s giving circle founded in the summer of 2007 as a special project of The Spartanburg County Foundation. It is one of more than 400 circles in the country.
