5-Day Workshop

In this hands-on workshop we will be building two small wood fired kilns: a soft brick, top loading, long-throat train kiln as well as a fast-fire, catenary arch kiln for vapor glazing made from high alumina brick. We will cover kiln design for general functionality and specific characteristics, site prep, foundation layout, and various brick laying techniques. Other topics will include arch form design, chimney construction, and buttressing for support. Kiln site workflow, maintenance and repair and wood processing will also be discussed. Students will leave this workshop with the functional knowledge necessary to build their own kiln.
