Your Vote Can Help Spartanburg KaBOOM! Earn a $25,000 Grant

Twenty-one Playful City USA communities are competing to receive grants of $25,000 from KaBOOM!, a national non-profit bringing play back into the lives of our children, to fund play-related projects in their communities and your vote could help determine the winners! Visit http://kaboom.shycast.com/contestant/25 between now and December 21, register, and cast your vote for Spartanburg!

The Spartanburg video video expresses the playfulness of Spartanburg, SC. The City's Mayor and Chief of police express their thoughts about play and how Spartanburg as a community is reducing childhood obesity, school under achievement, violence, and poverty. Watch as area children remind us of how we used to play... Hip, Hip, Let's Play!

In addition to the number of votes received, videos will be judged by a panel of KaBOOM! experts based on these criteria:

  • Effectiveness in answering the question of why their city is a Playful City USA
  • A demonstration of a diverse group of community stakeholders who support the cause of play
  • Creativity
Winners will be announced on January 8, 2008.

Playful City USA is a national recognition program honoring cities and towns across the nation who are committed to taking action for play. To earn the designation of Playful City USA, a community must meet the five commitments laid out in the program. Together, the five commitments below create a framework for a successful agenda on play.

    1. Create a Local Play Commission Task Force
    2. Design an annual Action Plan for play
    3. Conduct a Playspace Audit of all publicly accessible play areas
    4. Identify current spending on capital projects and maintenance of playspaces
    5. Proclaim and Celebrate an annual “Play Day”
KaBOOM! is a national nonprofit organization that envisions a great place to play within walking distance of every child in America. Celebrating eleven years of service in 2007, we rally communities to achieve better public policy, funding and public awareness for increased play opportunities nationwide; provide resources, including trainings, challenge grants, and publications for communities that wish to plan a new playspace on their own; and bring together children, business and community interests for a select number of community playspace builds each year.
