Spartanburg Day School Announces New Faculty and Staff for 2007-2008


Spartanburg Day School (SDS) is pleased to announce several new additions to the faculty and staff for the 2007-2008 school year. Spartanburg Day School is a college-preparatory, co-educational day school for students in grades pre-kindergarten through twelve.

Andy Scheffer has joined Spartanburg Day School as the Director of Admissions. Scheffer spent the last twelve years as the Director of Admissions at Palm Beach Day School in Florida as well as their varsity coach for soccer, lacrosse, and volleyball. He will serve Spartanburg Day School�s athletic program as varsity coach for both soccer and lacrosse. Scheffer earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Massachusetts and his Master of Science from Southern Connecticut State University.

Deborah Burke comes to Spartanburg Day School as an English Teacher for seventh and eighth grades. Burke has been the chair of the English Department at Palm Beach Day School in Florida for the past seventeen years. She is also a test preparation specialist in the areas of SSAT and SAT. She holds her Bachelor of Art in Education and Psychology from Mercy College and her Master of Science in Education in Reading Diagnosis and Development from Herbert Lehman College.

Ginna Purrington joins the Spartanburg Day School faculty as an Upper School English Teacher. Purrington has a diverse background as an instructor in college writing in Alaska, an English teacher at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh, North Carolina, an instructor with Outward Bound in New York City, and an Affiliate Editor with the Alaska Quarterly Review. She holds her Bachelor of Art degree from Duke University and her Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing and Literary Arts in Fiction 2006 from the University of Alaska.

Bonnie Webster will teach Upper School Biology and Environmental Science part time at Spartanburg Day School. Webster serves as an adjunct professor at USC Upstate and an environmental educator with the Watershed Ecology Center. She has also taught at Converse College and Porter-Gaud School in Charleston, SC. Webster holds her Bachelor of Arts in Biology and Spanish from Converse College and her Master of Science in Environmental Studies from MUSC/College of Charleston.

Elizabeth Flores has joined Spartanburg Day School as an Upper School Spanish Teacher as well as an English as a Second Language instructor. She taught Spanish in the Lower School during the previous school year. She holds her Bachelor of Arts in Modern Languages from Centro do Lengues Modernas in Pueblo, Mexico and her Master�s in International Business Administration from Gardner-Webb University.

Tonya Atkins will join Spartanburg Day School as a third grade teacher. Atkins comes with eighteen years of teaching experience and was most recently teaching at Westview Elementary School. She holds her Bachelor of Art in Elementary Education from Clemson University and her Master of Education in Reading and Storytelling from East Tennessee State University.

Sam Mitchell will be the new Lower School Art and Graphics teacher at Spartanburg Day School. Mitchell taught art for several years at McCracken Junior High School. She was also a painting restoration artist for the New Orleans Conservation Guild. Mitchell holds her Bachelor of Arts in Communication and Visual Arts from Loyola University at New Orleans and her Art Education Certification from Converse College.

Alex Ericson comes to Spartanburg Day School as Physical Education Director and Instructor. He will also serve as the varsity volleyball coach and the varsity girls basketball coach. Ericson was the Head Coach Volleyball and Basketball at Converse College from 1997 � 2002. He has also served as a PE instructor at the University f Nashville. Ericson holds his bachelor of Science in English from the University of Tennessee and his Master of Science in Human Performance and Sport Studies from the University of Tennessee.

Dr. Stacey Klein will be joining the Spartanburg Day School history department. She will be teaching European History, AP US History, and AP Modern European History. For the past four years, she has been teaching at Georgia State University in Atlanta. Dr. Klein did her undergraduate work at Duke, and received her Master of Art in history from the University of South Carolina. She completed her PhD. At the University at Illinois.

Brendan Murphy will teach math in the Upper School at Spartanburg Day School. Murphy has been the math coordinator for BASIS charter schools in Arizona for the past two years. Murphy holds his Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and physics from Georgetown University. He is currently pursuing graduate work in statistics.

Patricia Osborne will join Spartanburg Day School as a second grade teacher. Osborne taught at Spartanburg Day School from 1988-2000 and returns from the Carolina Classical School in Tryon, NC. Osborne holds her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina and her Master of Education degree from Converse College.

Cheryl Sprouse will join Spartanburg Day School as a fifth and sixth grade math teacher. Sprouse owned and operated Carolina Learning and Teacher�s Choice for fourteen years. She also taught in District 7 for several years. She has been an adjunct instructor at Spartanburg Community College for the last six years. She holds her Bachelor of Arts degree in Special Education from Converse College and her Master�s in Middle School Math from Gardner-Webb University.
