Spartanburg Youth Theatre Updates The Ugly Duckling with HONK! JR.

Hans Christian Anderson’s classic fairy tale The Ugly Duckling gets a musical modernization in Spartanburg Youth Theatre’s production of Honk! Jr. this February.

A fun-filled adventure about discovering the joys of being different, the musical follows the journey of Ugly, an awkward duck whose gawky looks inspire prejudice from family and friends.

“Honk is a beautiful show with a really important message,” says guest director Adam Sanders. “The show teaches us to embrace the things that make us different in other people’s eyes. Those unique traits we have are what make us special and bring worth to what we do in the world!” Twenty-four youth thespians, some veteran performers and some new to the SYT stage, perform the touching tale under Sanders’ direction.

HONK! JR. takes the stage at the Chapman Cultural Center’s David W. Reid Theatre on February 13th at 4:30 and 7pm and February 14th at 2pm.  Tickets are $12 for adults and $9 for students, and can be purchased by phone at 542-2787 or online at www.chapmanculturalcenter.org. Call the Youth Theatre office at 583-4891 for more information, or log onto the SYT website, www.spartanburgyouththeatre.com.
