Artist Talk and Reception: “Battle Bikinis vs. Breastplates: A Study of Sexism in Comic Costumes” Exhibition
4-6 p.m., Slide Room Gallery (Room 221), Daniel Building

“Battle Bikinis vs. Breastplates: A Study of Sexism in Comic Costumes” is a re-imagination of the superheroines who have been defined by major wardrobe malfunctions. From overtly sexualized cutouts to entirely impractical battle gear, the costumes of these characters have manifested questionable design choices for decades. Not all of these women started out wearing so little, but all of them have visited that section of the closet at least once, and all have been chosen here for their notorious wardrobes and their resultant pop culture status as cheesecake characters. The costume redesigns shown in the exhibition take practicality, gender equity and sensitivity to character into account, while still remaining visually dynamic. “Battle Bikinis vs. Breastplates: A Study of Sexism in Comic Costumes” is an attempt to reinterpret inappropriate, demeaning and impractical garb into something new, something more respectful, but still true to the characters, and still something that screams superhero cape couture. The exhibition will run through Friday, Dec. 16.
