At their meeting earlier this week, Spartanburg City Council approved a new honorary street name for the section of Beaumont Avenue in the Historic Beaumont Mill Village for Spartanburg native and NASCAR hall-of-famer, Walter M. “Bud” Moore in a 5-0 vote.
Council member Jerome Rice was absent from the meeting.
A lifelong resident of the area, the legendary former NASCAR team owner was nominated for the honorary street name by Council member Erica Brown. His Bud Moore Engineering was one of the dominant race teams of the 1960s, 70s and 80s. Moore’s drivers included some of the most legendary names in the history of the sport, including Buck Baker, Joe Weatherly, Buddy Baker, Bobby Allison, Fireball Roberts, Spartanburg’s David Pearson, Cale Yarborough, Darrell Waltrip, Geoff Bodine, Ricky Rudd, Morgan Shepherd and Dale Earnhardt. His drivers won 63 races and three Grand National championships.
Mr. Moore is also a World War II veteran who served with distinction. He landed in Normandy on D-Day and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Before he left Europe, Mr. Moore had earned two Bronze Stars and five Purple Hearts.
The city’s Honorary City Street Signs ordinance provides City Council with an avenue to recognize and honor local citizens who, in the determination of City Council, deserve to be honored for their significant contributions to the city. An honorary street naming does not officially change the name of a street, but does add the honorary name to the existing street signage.
