Spartanburg Youth Theatre Offers Fall Classes

Spartanburg Youth Theatre will offer several classes and workshops this fall for students (K4-12), beginning the week of September 14th.

Class highlights include an all-girl writing and performance class, an on-camera class including feedback from T3 Talent representatives and a series of new one-day workshops for high school students where teens will create their own television shows, learn sword-fighting from a certified fight director, and master the “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” style of improv comedy.

Other offerings include beginner and intermediate acting classes, a stagecraft class with SYT production designer Will Luther and an Inside Out themed class for K4 and K5.  There are two Friday classes specifically designed for homeschooled students.

Monday
Inside Out!
Grades: K4 & K5 | 3:30-4:30pm | 10 weeks | $100
Teacher: Betsy Kneisley
Join our favorite emotions like joy and sadness from the hit movie Inside Out on a ten-week journey of the mind! This fun class uses games and activities to teach kids about expressing emotions through actions, all while exploring where their imagination can take them with new friends.

I, Girl
Grades: 5th-8th | 4:15-5:30pm | 10 weeks | $120
Teacher: Lauren Ferebee
It’s time to make theatre “like a girl” – proud, unique and strong!  We live in an age where awesome women like Amy Poehler of the “Smart Girls” movement are making their voices heard as writers, actors and so much more – and we want SYT girls to join in. In this ten week class, every girl will get to explore her voice, show off her unique skills and create her very own theatre piece that will show family and friends why girls should run the world.

Tuesday
Acting I: Basics for Young Actors
Grades: 1st & 2nd | 3:30-4:45 | 10 weeks | $120
Teacher: Laura McClellan
In this beginner acting class, students will learn how to speak clearly, create characters and become comfortable working  in front of others. Through fun games and exercises, kids will learn basic skills in an interactive way, leaving class with new tools for expressing themselves and performing onstage.

Acting I: Acting Essentials and Audition Techniques
Grades: 3rd-5th | 4:15-5:30pm | 10 weeks | $120
Teacher: Pam Broome
In Acting 1: Acting Essentials and Audition Techniques, students will learn and have an opportunity to practice physical, vocal and imaginative skills for the stage. Using these new tools, each student will tell stories and ultimately work toward preparing a monologue that they can use to audition for the Spartanburg Youth Theatre and other youth theatre productions.

Wednesday
Camera Ready: Acting for Film, TV and Commercials
Grades: 1st-5th | 3:30-4:45pm | 10 weeks | $120
Teacher: Laura McClellan
LIGHTS, CAMERA – WAIT! You might be at home on the stage, but what happens when the camera starts rolling? Answer that question in this ten-week class which will cover basic techniques for on-camera auditions. Students learn important concepts like eyelines, slating and hitting their mark. In their last week, they will participate in a mock on-camera audition with feedback from industry professionals at T3 Talent.

Acting II: Monologues and Scenework
Grades: 6th-9th | 4:15-5:30pm | 10 weeks | $120
Teacher: Pam Broome
Designed for students with a solid foundation in basic acting, this class will apply skills in character creation to monologue and scene analysis. Students will focus on discovering clues in the script, creating interesting characters that use objectives and tactics to overcome obstacles. The last class will feature a scene and monologue showcase for family and friends.

Thursday
Build It, Sew It, Make It!
Grades: 6th-12th | 4:00-5:30pm | 10 weeks | $120
Teacher: Will Luther
Come backstage with Spartanburg Little Theatre and Spartanburg Youth Theatre production manager Will Luther to learn all about the preparation it takes to make a set, costume a show and more!  You will assist Will in designs for the current season’s show, including set painting and building costume/prop pieces – you might even see your handiwork on the big stage! Great for young DIY and craft enthusiasts.

Classes for Homeschoolers
Acting for Homeschoolers: Developing a Character
Grades: 6th-12th | 9:00-10:15am | 10 weeks | $120
Teacher: Dawn Byington
In this acting class, students will work on the many different facets of developing interesting characters.  Over the course of ten weeks, they will focus on script analysis, partner work and defining clear objectives and tactics, culminating in a scene showcase.

Acting for Homeschoolers: Acting Essentials and Audition Techniques
Grades: 2nd-5th | 10:30-11:45am | 10 weeks | $120
Teacher: Dawn Byington
The Basic Acting and Audition Techniques class offers students all the tools necessary to succeed in a rehearsal room and at an audition. Using movement and voice, students will learn to express themselves as confident performers, and prepare short monologues that can be used as audition pieces after the class ends.
